This demand growth is being met by rising natural gas supplies from North American shale plays (whose maturity is increasing gas-oil ratios along with expansions of newer plays such as Haynesville) and new onshore and offshore discoveries around the world.

Exploration and production of natural gas and LNG are also getting cheaper as breakeven costs keep falling in shale and beyond. Midstream infrastructure has also kept pace with capital investments globally in gathering lines, gas processing plants, natural gas liquid (NGL) fractionators, sulfur recovery, carbon dioxide (CO2) and acid gas removal, and transmission and local distribution pipelines.

Similarly, LNG production and export capacity have grown in North America and the Middle East while LNG production costs and prices have fallen with technology and business model innovation. Meanwhile, LNG contracting and pricing face commoditization expanding use across more emerging economies.

Collectively, natural gas and LNG are positioned as critical fuels in the global energy mix well through 2050 and beyond.
