ADI’s Global long-term HVO/RD capacity database

Global hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and renewable diesel (RD) capacity has expanded rapidly since 2019, led primarily by North America. By 2024, North America accounted for more than 60% of global HVO/RD capacity, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific, with China emerging as a key renewable fuel exporter to the European market.

Looking ahead to 2030, ADI projects global HVO/RD capacity to grow by over 6 billion gallons per year (Bgpy). The largest additions are expected in the United States and Europe, particularly in Sweden and the Netherlands. At the same time, South America, driven by Brazil and Panama, is set to become an increasingly important growth region for HVO/RD production. Notable projects expected to come online by 2030 include:

  • NXTClean Fuels Port Westward refinery (0.8 Bgpy) in the U.S.
  • Fidelis New Energy Grön Fuels refinery (0.3 Bgpy) in the U.S.
  • Preem Lysekil refinery (0.2 Bgpy) in Sweden
  • Neste Rotterdam refinery expansion (0.2 Bgpy) in the Netherlands
  • SGP Bioenergy refinery (0.2 Bgpy) in Panama
  • Petrobras Presidente Bernardes refinery (0.2 Bgpy) in Brazil

The ADI Global HVO/RD capacity database tracks these developments closely and in detail, providing comprehensive data on capacity by region, country, location, producer, status, and expected start-up date. Designed for ADI Plus subscribers, the database aims to provide refiners, project and technology developers, EPCs, OEMs, and investors with timely insights to support strategic planning, operations, and investment in the growing HVO/RD market.
