Global LNG capacity grew by more than 20 million tons per annum (mtpa) from 2023 through mid-2025. North America, including the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, accounted for about 65% of this new capacity. Additionally, 2 mtpa of this capacity came from floating terminals and ~11 mtpa from terminals with small-scale, modular LNG trains (each less than 1 mtpa).
Key new terminals that have come online in the recent past include:
- LNG Canada T1 (7 mtpa) in Canada
- Corpus Christi Stage 3 T1 (1.49 mtpa) in the U.S.
- Plaquemines LNG T1 to T8 (4.45 mtpa) in the U.S.
- Altamira Fast LNG 1 (1.40 mtpa) in Mexico
- Tangguh LNG T3 (3.80 mtpa) in Indonesia
- Tortue/Ahmeiyim FLNG 1 (1.40 mtpa) in Mauritania
- Tango FLNG terminal (0.60 mtpa) in Congo
Looking out to 2030, ADI expects global LNG export capacity to grow by over 177 mtpa. While the U.S. will drive this growth (see ADI’s recently published U.S. LNG export terminals database), other countries adding significant capacity include Qatar (46.80 mtpa), Mozambique (12.88 mtpa), and Canada (12.10 mtpa). Of this upcoming capacity, roughly 5% (10 mtpa) will be from floating terminals and 9% (16 mtpa) will be from small-scale, modular designs.
ADI’s Global LNG capacity database provides detailed information, including capacity by region, country, project, train, start-up date, and technology. The database aims to help various stakeholders including natural gas producers, midstream operators, project developers, EPCs, and equipment manufacturers, maintenance and repair providers, and investors make strategic, operational, or investment decisions.
