In December 2024, the SAF sector showed global momentum in adoption and production through collaborations, new technologies, and supportive frameworks.
- Formula 1 has expanded its commitment to SAF through a new partnership with Qatar Airways, building on its existing collaboration with DHL.
- EasyJet, a leading European low-cost airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Fuel Services, a global fuel distributor, and Braathens Renavia, a Swedish SAF producer, to secure a long-term SAF supply for its operations across the U.K. and Europe.
- Phillips66 has signed an agreement with United Airlines to supply ~8 million gallons of SAF for use at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
- Samsung Engineering & Construction (Samsun E&A) has secured a $955 million contract, in collaboration with Petronas, Eni, and Euglena to construct a biorefinery in Johor, Malaysia, that will produce SAF and hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO).
- Oklahoma has announced a partnership with EE North America, a subsidiary of Denmark-based European Energy A/S, to develop e-SAF and green hydrogen within the state.
- MAIRE, an Italian-based engineering and construction (E&C) company, has been awarded a contract by DG Fuels to provide early engineering, licensing, and Process Design Package (PDP) services for their SAF plant in Nebraska, U.S.
- The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed $35 million in equity and debt financing to SAFCO Venture Holdings Limited to establish Pakistan’s first SAF facility in Sheikhupura, Punjab.
- GreenSinnergy, a German SAF developer, has announced plans to establish a SAF production facility in Chubut, Argentina, with an initial investment of $2.5 billion investment to produce ~33 million gallons of SAF annually.
- CleanJoule, a U.S.-based SAF developer, has introduced SpaceSAF, a renewable drop-in replacement for traditional rocket propellants like RP-1 and RP-2. SpaceSAF offers a 4% increase in energy density over conventional petroleum-based fuels, enhancing rocket performance and efficiency.
- LiquidSun, a Finnish-technology company, has secured $4.2 million investment to develop Finland’s eSAF production testing facility in Finland. Location details and production volumes have not been disclosed.
- In October 2024, ICAO expanded the list of CORSIA-approved programs for the first compliance phase (2024-2026) by adding four new initiatives: Climate Action Reserve, Global Carbon Council, Gold Standard, and Verified Carbon Standard. This decision brings the total number of approved programs for the CORSIA first phase to six, joining previously approved programs like the American Carbon Registry (ACR) and Architecture for REDD+Transactions (ART).
