In January 2024, SAF progress included Indian research, more airport SAF, airline supply deals, and the first ethanol-to-SAF plant.

  • The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) announced its intention to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for the collaborative development, testing, and certification of SAF in India.
  • Long Beach Airport announced the availability of SAF for general aviation jets.
  • Norwegian Air Shuttle and Cargolux Airlines announced a partnership with Norsk e-Fuel for the supply of ~46 million gallons of SAF.
  • Lanzajet announced the opening of Lanzajet Freedom Pines Fuels, the world’s first ethanol-to-SAF production facility.
  • Honeywell announced that Acelen Renewables selected its Ecofining technology to produce ~307 million gallons of SAF and renewable diesel per year.
  • Topsoe announced the implementation of its HydroFlex technology at Preem’s Lysekil refinery in Sweden.
  • Blue Biofuels and Vertimass have established an equal partnership to leverage Vertimass’ proprietary Consolidated Alcohol Deoxygenation and Oligomerization (CADO) technology to produce SAF.
  • Azure Sustainable Fuels and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) announced a partnership on a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study to produce SAF in Canada.
  • Ryanair and Enilive signed a Letter of intent (LOI) for the supply of ~33 million gallons of SAF at select Ryanair airports across Italy between 2024 and 2030.
  • Hong Kong’s Business Environment Council (BEC), along with Cathay Pacific and 13 other industry stakeholders, launched the Hong Kong SAF Coalition (HKSAFC) to support SAF adoption in the region.
  • Emirates announced the extension of its collaboration with Neste, securing the supply of ~3 million gallons of SAF in 2024 and 2025.
