2023 October II SAF Tracker highlights

In October 2023, SAF progress featured major deals, new facilities, regulatory steps, airline agreements, key partnerships, tech choices, successful engine tests, and first commercial flights.

• DHL Express and World Energy announced a seven-year contract through the purchase of ~176 million gallons of SAF via sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc).
• Velocys launched its new technology facility in Ohio dedicated to hosting the reactor core assembly and catalysis operations, which are vital to the production process of SAF.
• Formal engagement has started for Lighthouse Green Fuels’ (LGF) Development Consent Order (DCO) application for an advanced SAF facility on Teesside.
• OMV announced an offtake agreement with Ryanair for the supply of ~165,000 gallons of SAF at Vienna Airport in 2023.
• Emirates and Neste announced a partnership to provide ~3 million gallons of SAF through 2024 and 2025.
• Johnson Matthey, a technology provider, and BP announced that EDL Anlagenbau (EDL) has selected their Fischer Tropsch (FT) technology for EDL’s HyKero plant located in Germany.
• Honeywell announced testing 100% SAF in its business jet engine on an Embraer aircraft.
• Rolls-Royce concluded a series of tests for its Pearl 15 and Pearl 10X business aviation engines using 100% SAF.
• Garuda Indonesia conducted its inaugural commercial flight, utilizing SAF derived from palm oil, on a route connecting the capital Jakarta to Surakarta city.
