In September 2023, SAF progress accelerated via tour operator investments, government funding, cargo programs, and long-term airline deals.
- Kneissl Touristik, an Austrian tour operator, announced an investment in SAF use for flights with Austrian Airlines and other airlines of the Lufthansa Group.
- Gevo announced an agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to boost SAF production. Under the agreement, Gevo is set to receive a grant of up to $30 million for the company’s Climate-Smart Farm-to-Flight Program.
- Korean Air launched an Air Cargo SAF Program, enabling customers to make voluntary contributions that will be allocated towards the purchase of SAF.
- United Airlines announced an offtake agreement with Cemvita for the supply of one billion gallons of SAF over a 20-year period.
- Bank of America, Delta Air Lines, Ecola, and Xcel Energy partnered with Great MSP to establish the Minnesota SAF hub.
- Aemetis received a use permit from the City of Riverbank for the construction of a 90 million gpy SAF and renewable diesel plant.
- Varo announced the construction of a SAF facility at the Gunover Energy Rotterdam site. Starting in 2026, the facility will produce 79 million gpy of SAF.
- Airbus announced a partnership with DG Fuels to expand SAF production. Their Louisiana plant aims to have an initial production capacity of up 120 million gpy of SAF by 2026.
- Lummus Technology, a provider of proprietary technologies, announced the commercial availability of its ethanol-to-SAF process technology.
