Global progress in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) accelerated in August 2023, marked by inaugural flights, strategic collaborations, and advancements in technologies. El Al Airlines completed its first SAF-powered delivery flight, while Lufthansa Group partnered with HCS Group to expand production and supply efforts. Shandong Haike Chemical adopted Axens’ technology, and Swedish Biofuels received ASTM approval for higher blending ratios.
The sector also advanced on project financing and innovation. Gevo’s Net-Zero 1 project entered the funding stage under a major U.S. clean energy initiative, and Sumitomo Corporation collaborated with Axens and Allotrope Partners to assess woody biomass-based bioethanol pathways in California. Google, Shell Aviation, and American Express Global Travel, together with major partners, launched a corporate SAF financing program supporting aviation’s transition toward net zero.
