In July 2023, SAF adoption advanced through inaugural refueling, certifications, airline tests, airport availability, technology partnerships, funding bids, government support, and new production facility construction.

  • Cathay Pacific conducted its first SAF refueling on commercial flights.
  • In June of this year, the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) certified nine batches of SAF under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
  • Korean Air announced partnership with GS Caltex to conduct test flights using SAF.
  • Cepsa started selling SAF at four major airports in Spain.
  • Airbus and LanzaJet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the development of SAF facilities using LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology.
  • Uniper and Sasol ecoFT applied for funding from the Swedish Energy Agency and the EU Innovation Fund to advance the development of the SkyFuelH2 project in Sweden.
  • Australia’s Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) pledged $30 million to support the advancement of SAF in the country.
  • Twelve, a start-up developing SAF, began the construction process for a new facility in Moses Lake, Washington.
