Global momentum for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) strengthened in July 2023, advanced through initial commercial deployment, certification milestones, and expanded investment activity. Cathay Pacific completed its first SAF-powered commercial flights, while Korean Air partnered with GS Caltex to conduct SAF test operations.
The month also saw regulatory and industry collaboration. The International Sustainability & Carbon Certification and Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials certified new SAF batches under CORSIA, while Airbus and LanzaJet signed an MoU to advance alcohol-to-jet technology. Cepsa began retailing SAF across major Spanish airports, Australia’s Renewable Energy Agency pledged new funding to boost domestic SAF initiatives, and Twelve commenced construction of a new SAF facility in Washington, signaling expanding global production capacity.
