Global progress in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) advanced in June 2023, supported by feasibility studies, financial participation, and government funding. LanzaJet and LanzaTech led new SAF evaluations in New Zealand, while Bank of America became the first financial institution to join American Express Global Business Travel and Shell Aviation’s SAF program. Japan Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo expanded procurement and logistics partnerships, and TotalEnergies set a new production target.
The sector also saw continued investment and project development. Twelve and Azure Sustainable Fuels announced new facility plans in North America, Holcim and EDF advanced e-SAF pilot projects, and Sasol and Topsoe formed a joint venture for SAF development. Governments in Canada and France unveiled major funding initiatives, underscoring growing institutional backing for aviation decarbonization.
