Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) activity gained traction in June 2023, marked by inaugural flights, funding announcements, and new research partnerships. State Grid Space Technology completed its first helicopter flight using SAF in China, while Boeing partnered with the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials to study regional SAF production.
The sector also saw infrastructure and investment progress. Navigator Terminals and Alfanar launched a study for the U.K.’s first SAF handling terminal, TotalEnergies expanded capacity at its Grandpuits biorefinery in France, and Volaris joined a major investment initiative through CleanJoule. The U.K. government advanced proposed rules mandating SAF blending, reinforcing long-term policy momentum.
