In March 2023, SAF adoption progressed through airline acquisitions, production shifts, feasibility studies, and R&D initiatives.

  • Finnair announced the acquisition of 250,000 gallons of SAF from Neste.
  • Nacero will convert its facility in Texas to produce SAF and carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) using Topsoe’s methanol-to-jet (MTJ) technology.
  • Eneos and Ampol announced a partnership to study the feasibility of producing SAF in Brisbane, Australia.
  • DG Fuels started a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for a potential SAF plant in St. James Parish, Louisiana.
  • United’s Sustainable Flight Fund announced its first two investments: Viridos and Svante.
  • LanzaJet announced a partnership with Jet Zero Australia to lead feasibility studies for SAF production in Queensland, Australia.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $14 million fund for technologies that convert biomass and waste resources into biofuels and bioproducts through syngas conversion and biocatalysts.
  • Washington State plans to create a research and development center focused on SAF and low-carbon fuels in Snohomish County’s Paine Field.
