In December 2022, global SAF adoption by airlines drove infrastructure growth, production capacity increases, and technological advancements in production and engine compatibility.

  • As airlines across the world continue to adopt and commit to increase share of SAF in their operations, infrastructure developments for SAF transportation is on the rise, such as the NATO CEPS that started transporting SAF in 2023.
  • Global SAF production capacity is expected to reach 6.3 billion gallons per year (gpy) in 2026.
  • LanzaTech and Velocys are planning SAF production plants in the U.K. LanzaTech is planning to use gases produced in steelmaking and Velocys will use hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and renewable electricity for SAF production.
  • OEMs are focusing heavily on improving engine efficiency as well as improving the ability to run aircrafts on 100% SAF.
  • HEFA is the leading pathway for SAF production and demand growth for used cooking oil is gaining momentum.
  • Research efforts on developing new feedstocks for SAF including plant-based sugars and camelina oil from different sources are being promoted.
  • The U.S. Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Services published guidelines to qualify for the SAF credit and ways to claim them on the excise tax system or as taxed income.
