Global SBS and SEBS adhesives and sealants

ADI Chemical Market Resources (ADI CMR) conducted a strategic study of the global SBS and SEBS adhesives market, focusing on styrenic block copolymers used in pressure-sensitive, hot-melt, and contact adhesives. SEBS, a hydrogenated form of SBS, offers improved UV and thermal stability, tensile strength, and service temperature. The study examines market dynamics shaped by commoditization, new entrants, and competition from polyolefin-based elastomers and acrylics. Applications in packaging, hygiene, construction, and automotive are explored, with forecasts of SEBS demand by application and regional growth outlooks. This report offers insight into key suppliers, emerging technologies, and future opportunities.

SBS and SEBS adhesives technologies

Styrene Block Copolymers (SBC) are synthetic polymers that have versatile properties due to their molecular structure, which is an aromatic-aliphatic combination. Styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) are two types of SBCs that are used in adhesives and sealants. SEBS are saturated triblock polymers that are made by hydrogenating SBS during the manufacturing process. SEBS have a higher tensile strength and service temperature than unsaturated SBS, and SEBS are less vulnerable to thermal and ultraviolet light degradation.

SBS and SEBS adhesives market drivers

SBC markets have undergone several changes in recent years, including commoditization of SBCs, emergence of new SBC producers, capacity additions, and developments of alternate competing polyolefins and elastomers. Polymer modification is the largest use of SBC but there are several other important application areas, including adhesives and sealants. Adhesives are used, for example, in pressure-sensitive formulations, tapes, hot-melts, contact, and spray adhesives. SBC adhesives compete with alternate technologies. For example, in nonwoven markets, SBC use is declining as manufacturers switch away from SBCs that have a scent to non-fragrant acrylics. SBS-based adhesives can be used by itself or in combination with another SBC copolymer, in applications such as diapers, packaging, automotive, and construction. SEBS-based sealants are used in variety of applications including tapes, labels, coatings, and road-making paints. The figure below shows growth of SEBS in a range of applications.
