ADI Chemical Market Resources (ADI CMR) conducted a strategic study of global styrene block copolymer (SBC) markets, including SBS, SEBS, and SIS. These thermoplastic elastomers offer outstanding mechanical, elastic, and processing properties and are widely used as polymer modifiers and in adhesives, films, wire and cable, roofing, and automotive parts. The report analyzes supply-demand dynamics, evolving applications, and regional demand trends, with a focus on the growing role of SBCs amid competition from alternative polyolefin and elastomer technologies. It provides supplier insights, market forecasts, and strategic recommendations for industry stakeholders.
Styrene block copolymer technologies
Styrene Block Copolymers (SBC) are synthetic polymers that have versatile properties due to their molecular structure, which is an aromatic-aliphatic combination. They exhibit excellent elastic, physical, mechanical, and processing properties. SBCs are a type of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), sometimes called TPE-S. SBCs include styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS). SBCs are used as polymer modifiers by blending these polymers into polyolefins or elastomers.
SBC market drivers
SBC markets have undergone several changes in recent years, including commoditization of SBCs, emergence of new SBC producers, capacity additions, and developments of alternate competing polyolefins and elastomers. The largest market for SBCs is polymer modification. Other important applications include adhesives and sealants, films, medical, wire & cable, roofing, fibers, automotive, consumer products, and others. As shown in the figure below, SBS are the largest type of SBC used. Exhibit below shows global styrene block copolymers demand by type in 2015.
