In September 2026 edition, chemical portfolio realignment continued to accelerate. Shell is exploring the sale of its U.S. chemicals business, while TotalEnergies acquired Shell’s European renewables unit and Lotte Chemical moves to divest its Southeast Asian petrochemical subsidiaries. Sika expanded its adhesives and sealants footprint in Turkey, and Mitsui increased its stake in Nutrinova to strengthen its chemical intermediates supply chain. Capacity investment also continued in semiconductor-linked specialty chemicals, with Solvay and Syensqo expanding production in Taiwan and India, even as H&L Advanced and Methanex idle legacy naphtha cracking and methanol facilities.
On technology and regulation, Envalior and Lummus Technology advanced circular polyamide recycling and lower-carbon ammonia production, while China’s new consumption tax on batteries and solar cells signals continued policy pressure toward industry consolidation.
