At the 2024 ADI Forum, Oliver Tuckerman, Co-President, Blue Sky Infrastructure; Kal Al-Labadi, VP, Product Management, Sundyne; and Jan Sherman, Chief Development Officer, Carbonvert, joined Maria Lopes, Sr. Analyst, ADI Analytics for a panel discussion on the latest advancements in carbon capture, utilization, storage, and direct air capture technologies. It was agreed that CCUS were now deemed essential for decarbonization, projected to achieve 7% of CO2 reduction by 2050 across various industries. While initial projects targeted economically viable “low-hanging fruit” broader adoption requires significant scale, cost reduction, technological maturation, and a more streamlined regulatory process for injection wells.
Regulatory delays for Class VI injection wells remained a key hurdle for CCUS adoption, yet the industry anticipated significant project growth by 2030-2035. Scaling CCUS necessitated new infrastructure in heavy industrial zones and advanced, cost-effective technologies. Economically viable CO2 storage hubs, particularly offshore, require substantial volume, targeting high-purity emitters and low-carbon product manufacturers.
