At the 2023 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Carlos Villa, R&D Fellow, Dow Chemical, discussed the high cost of carbon dioxide utilization. He did this with moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics. He explained that the high energy cost of carbon utilization for chemicals often stems from hydrogen production from water. This cost is not from the CO2 conversion itself.
This emphasized the need to direct investments towards pathways that offer the most efficient “electron returns” for effective decarbonization. Prioritizing these energy-efficient solutions and performing clear cost calculations was crucial. This is especially true for strategic capital allocation, given the current cost of power.
