At the 2023 ADI Forum, KC Littlefield, GM, Tech. Commercialization CCUS, Chevron New Energies; Chris Fraughton, Director of CCS & Heat Pumps, MAN ES; and Brandon Schwertner, CEO, Priority Power Management, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics, on the Decarbonizing O&G / CCUS panel. During the conversation, concerns were highlighted about the environmental impact of 5G infrastructure, particularly its significant power consumption despite claims of efficiency. Also raised was the issue of decommissioning aging renewable energy assets like fiberglass wind turbine blades and solar panels. These assets currently lack sustainable disposal solutions, which were not adequately factored into initial project costs. The proliferation of private 5G networks in oil fields aims to address communication and cybersecurity concerns. However, it still contributes to overall energy demand. The conversation then shifted to carbon capture and storage (CCS), with an initial focus on storage. They acknowledged that a long-term solution would balance both storage and utilization. The panelists emphasized the global nature of these challenges and stressed the critical need for a clear price on carbon to drive widespread adoption of solutions.
