The natural gas dilemma: can infrastructure keep up with demand?

At the 2023 ADI Forum, Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics, highlighted the opportunities and roadblocks facing the U.S. natural gas industry. While production was booming, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and hitting record highs, growth was being held back. The main issue was infrastructure constraints, particularly a shortage of pipelines. With demand rising for LNG exports and industrial use expanding, the market was evolving. Oil-driven associated gas production was playing a key role. However, the industry’s future hinged on critical factors like regulatory policies, global energy demand, and geopolitical shifts. Despite this, the U.S. maintained a competitive edge with low production costs. Challenges like LNG price volatility and China’s energy strategy will shape the road ahead. As natural gas cements its role in the energy transition, investment in pipelines and export capacity will be essential. This investment is crucial for unlocking long-term potential and ensuring the U.S. remains a dominant global supplier.
