The evolving landscape of CCUS

At the 2023 ADI Forum, Chris Fraughton, Director of CCS and Heat Pumps, MAN ES, and KC Littlefield, GM of Technology Commercialization, CCUS, Chevron New Energies, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO of ADI Analytics, on the decarbonizing oil and gas/CCUS panel. They shared insights on the booming carbon capture market. Fraughton noted a surge in demand driven by the IRA and by projects in ammonia, blue hydrogen, and ethanol. Littlefield highlighted Chevron’s broad approach to carbon capture, including the exploration of various technologies such as next‑generation direct air capture. Both speakers emphasized the rapid growth and evolving landscape of carbon capture. OEMs were a bottleneck, with a rush to secure manufacturing slots for hundreds of compressor casings annually. While all carbon capture markets were active, high‑concentration applications were moving the fastest. There was less firm business in large, joint‑venture‑driven CCS hubs. Chevron was actively exploring direct air capture (DAC) technologies, aiming for scalable solutions. They were also assessing their involvement in conventional amine‑based carbon capture, which was well‑suited for high‑concentration sources but not economical for smaller volumes.
