At the 2023 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Carlos Villa, R&D Fellow, Dow Chemical, and Matthew Seabaugh, VP, Product Launch, Nexceris LLC, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics. This occurred during the decarbonizing chemicals panel. They discussed the SMRs’ role in the electrification of crackers, highlighting how this process could transform energy use in chemical production. They also talked about the potential benefits of using nuclear reactors in conjunction with other technologies.
Villa said that Dow was investigating small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for chemical production, emphasizing that the electrification of crackers using high-temperature SMRs could meet rising low-carbon power demands. High-temperature SMRs can provide both electricity and crucial process heat for energy-intensive reactions. This strategic integration of SMRs in the electrification of crackers, also considering non-nuclear options like solid oxide fuel cells, aimed to centralize energy supply and leverage favorable electricity pricing. Thus, driving research into new materials for these challenging, efficient production methods.
