At the 2023 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Matthew Seabaugh, VP, Product Launch, Nexceris LLC, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics, during the decarbonizing chemicals panel. He addressed the reactant-driven approach toward electrification, and the energy intensity of decarbonization. This approach is central to reactant driven electrification efforts. Research was exploring new catalytic pathways that don’t solely rely on CO2 and water as starting materials. One approach involved improving CO2 utilization as a reactant in processes aiming for a higher carbon content syngas. This technique incorporated blends of CO2 and water, enabled by advanced thermal supports and control technologies.
Additionally, significant work was underway in high-temperature electrolyzer development, crucial for reactant driven electrification. The focus was predominantly in the solid oxide space. These systems, operating at elevated temperatures, offered improved energy efficiencies compared to lower-temperature electrochemical methods. However, they required careful integration with downstream processes to leverage their heat component effectively. Reactant driven electrification strategies aim to utilize such integration effectively.
