At the 2023 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Carlo Badiola, SVP, Engineering and Technology, Encina; and Richard Shaw, Director, Circular Economy & Sustainability, AmSty, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics, on the innovation panel to discuss issues surrounding plastic waste management. They shared that the polyolefins industry faced rapid change driven by regulations, with a global plastic treaty under discussion. While the US and China focus was on reducing pollution, Europe aimed to cut production. Domestically, varied state-level regulations were emerging, supporting either advanced or mechanical recycling based on local permissions.

A key challenge was ensuring sufficient feedstock for growing recycling capacity, which is essential for effective plastic waste management. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies were evolving in the US, with industry groups supporting balanced approaches to plastic waste management that fund infrastructure, while opposing overly restrictive regulations seen in some states.
