Gaining a competitive edge in LNG

At the 2023 ADI Forum, Jeff Hammad, CCO of Golden Pass LNG, alongside other experts, examined LNG project development strategies, focusing on stick-built vs. modular construction. Golden Pass LNG had opted for a traditional stick-built approach, leveraging existing Qatar-based designs while prioritizing local job creation and community engagement. Despite the competitive costs and faster timelines of modular LNG construction, Golden Pass had prioritized long-term reliability over speed. The forum also assessed key success factors, emphasizing the importance of solid EPC contracts, financial stability, and resilience to unforeseen challenges, such as hurricane disruptions.

The discussion explored different LNG business models, contrasting merchant models like Golden Pass and Cheniere, where the facility sourced gas, with tolling models like Freeport and Cameron, where buyers paid a liquefaction fee. Experts highlighted how pre-sold LNG contracts and strong equity backing played crucial roles in securing long-term viability, with companies like Sempra’s Port Arthur LNG and NextDecade’s Rio Grande project gaining momentum. The forum underscored the evolving LNG landscape, where project execution, financing, and market adaptability shaped industry success.
