At the 2023 ADI Forum, Jeff Hammad, CCO of Golden Pass LNG, discussed technical innovations in LNG development, emphasizing the challenges of integrating new technologies due to regulatory constraints. Golden Pass LNG had faced permitting limitations that discouraged facility modifications, delaying carbon capture and storage (CCS) adoption until post-construction to avoid lengthy regulatory reviews. However, the forum acknowledged modular LNG construction as a potential game changer, with companies like Venture Global and Lake Charles pioneering smaller, scalable LNG units that could transform future facility design and operations.
Panelists also examined emissions management strategies, noting the rise of methane monitoring technologies such as Project Canary and MIQ certifications. While U.S. LNG projects had gained credibility in emissions reductions, Qatar remained the global leader due to its carbon sequestration initiatives and shorter gas transportation distances, minimizing fuel loss and infrastructure emissions. Experts anticipated a race between Qatar and the U.S. in emissions performance, with LNG operators evaluating certification programs and technology advancements to remain competitive.
