She projected that despite ambitious goals for plastic recycling, virgin plastic demand would only decrease by 34%. This would require massive investments in infrastructure beyond just recycling technologies to efficiently address the challenges faced with plastic recycling. Many countries were already curbing polyethylene use through bans or taxes.
Recycling’s impact varied by application for materials like HDPE, favoring non-food uses. The industry was innovating through design for recyclability, increased recycled content, downgauging, and advanced recycling. However, the growing demand for bio-based plastics raised concerns about significant land use, highlighting key challenges in the recycling of plastics.
