He noted a significant shift in the global top 20 chemical producers since 2000, underscoring the need for companies to adapt their strategies to remain competitive in this evolving landscape.
Maughon also addressed the challenges in chemical innovation, pointing out a slowdown in fundamental technological breakthroughs since the 1980s. He stressed the importance of strategic, step-wise capital investments in new technologies, particularly for decarbonization and circularity. This approach, he argued, is crucial for companies to meet growing customer and regulatory pressures and avoid market disruption.
