At the 2023 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Manuel Diaz, Senior Analyst, ADI Analytics, shared ADI’s insights on decarbonizing chemicals in plastics and polymers during the specialty and performance polymers panel. Companies in chemicals, advanced materials, and packaging were committing to net zero goals, investing heavily in decarbonization. Their strategies included using alternative feedstocks, electrifying processes, capturing and utilizing CO2, and leveraging digital transformation for emission reduction. While bio-based feedstocks were gaining traction, their methane emissions upon degradation highlighted the complex nature of achieving true net zero.
Decarbonizing the energy-intensive chemical industry was a major challenge. However, captured CO2 can be transformed into valuable products like carbon monoxide, building aggregates, or polymers. Innovation in these CO2 utilization pathways would be key, demonstrating that emissions can be a resource.
