Tackling fugitive emissions: Insights from midstream operators

At the 2022 ADI Forum, Paul Bieniawski, CEO, Enstor Gas LLC, and David Paradis, CEO, Trillium Flow Technologies, joined a discussion on the midstream & NGLs panel. Midstream operators were stepping up efforts to reduce fugitive emissions by adopting innovations such as blowdown gas recovery during maintenance. They were also using drones and handheld sniffers for advanced leak detection. Although comprehensive benchmarks were still lacking, companies were prioritizing operational changes to minimize leak risks. They aimed to improve sustainability through better sealing and self-monitoring technologies.

A major challenge lay in the aging infrastructure across the midstream sector. To address this, there was a growing push to bring over advanced sealing and leak management techniques from downstream and international operations. Open communication and the adoption of these technologies were seen as critical. This was necessary for modernizing practices and curbing emissions industry-wide.
