At the 2022 ADI Forum, Aaron Ketter, VP Mid-Continent & S. Texas Business Unit at Devon Energy, discussed the industry’s shifting approach to emissions reduction, particularly the elimination of routine flaring. Ketter highlighted how Devon Energy had achieved nearly zero percent routine flaring across its assets, demonstrating that strategic planning and operational discipline made it feasible. He emphasized that industry-wide scrutiny had intensified, pushing companies to adopt proactive measures and explore alternative emission reduction strategies, such as transitioning equipment from natural gas activation to air or electric.
Ketter also pointed to behavioral and engineering solutions, stressing that containable emissions required a mix of better operational practices, improved facility designs, and advanced monitoring. He described Devon’s multi-technology site in Mid-Con, utilizing lasers and infrared cameras to enhance detection and mitigation efforts. The discussion underscored the importance of integrating frequent monitoring and innovative solutions to drive sustainability, positioning technological advancements as essential for achieving long-term emissions reductions.
