At the 2022 ADI Forum, Eric Bradley, MD of New Energies & Sustainability at Taurus Investment Holdings, and industry experts discussed the global building stock, noting that 50% of existing structures would remain for the next 30–40 years, while an equal percentage still needed to be built. The conversation emphasized scalability in sustainable construction, focusing on selecting the right technologies for different real estate types. For new builds, developers had adopted community geogrids, which functioned as private utility networks powering ground-source heat pumps. This approach had been cost-effective over decades, though requiring strong business models for long-term viability.
For commercial buildings, retrofitting with ground loop systems had been explored as a cost-effective drilling solution, though not always practical at scale. In many cases, developers had instead relied on air-source technologies and solar installations to increase efficiency without extensive infrastructure modifications. The forum highlighted the importance of tailored energy solutions, ensuring that existing buildings could be sustained efficiently while new developments integrated advanced systems from the outset.
