At the FlexPO+ 2022 (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Jose Mendez, Global Business Director, SK Geo Centric, joined moderator Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics during the specialty and performance polymers panel. He discussed how the sustainability of multi-layer films extended beyond recyclability to include its role in food preservation. By significantly extending the shelf life of products like ham and cheese, packaging reduced food waste, which in turn lowered CO2 emissions, outweighing concerns about 100% recyclability in some cases.
However, evolving regulations increasingly demanded high percentages of recyclable content in packaging. This presented a challenge, particularly for multi-layer films in packaging where functional polymers, though a small percentage of the total, are critical for performance and need to be integrated into mechanically recyclable solutions.
