Methanol’s rising role: Growth, innovation, and future demand

During the 2020 ADI Forum, Gregory Dolan, CEO, Methanol Institute, discussed the growing significance of methanol in the global energy landscape. Despite historical concerns about toxicity and handling, innovations, such as Li Shufu’s methanol-powered taxis in China, demonstrate its safe integration into transportation. With 20,000 such taxis operating in China, methanol is emerging as a viable alternative fuel. Safety remains paramount, particularly in marine applications, where the International Maritime Organization has established stringent protocols, including double-walled piping and vapor detection systems. Beyond transportation, methanol sees widespread use in China’s industrial boilers and cook stoves, with millions of tons consumed annually. As safety standards advance, methanol is increasingly recognized as a practical, scalable, and cleaner energy solution for the future.
