During the 2020 ADI Forum, industry leaders John Powell, SVP & COO, NGLs, Crestwood Equity Partners, and Eric Hazeldine, EVP & Midstream SME, Quorum Software, addressed the significant challenge of midstream constraints in key basins, notably Western Canada. Pipeline delays, canceled LNG projects, and negative gas prices are hindering producers’ market access, especially for natural gas exports to Asia. Despite these hurdles, the industry is adapting, with the “incremental barrel” finding its way to export hubs like Ferndale in the U.S. and AltaGas facilities as producers prioritize cost-effective solutions. The overarching goal, whether for natural gas, crude oil, or NGLs, is to reduce logistics costs and maximize producer returns, emphasizing that efficient hydrocarbon movement to the right markets will be crucial for maintaining competitiveness as infrastructure development progresses.
