Can oil & gas giants succeed in the power sector?

At the 2020 ADI Forum, the Power Panel highlighted how oil and gas companies possessed significant capabilities relevant to the power sector. The discussion, featuring Mark Herrmann, VP Commercial Operations at NRG Energy, and Eric Carlos, Senior Executive Advisor at SoEnergy International, examined how these companies, facing evolving challenges in their traditional markets, were strategically entering power generation and retail electricity. A key advantage lay in their control over fuel supply, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), which enhanced margins and competitiveness in power generation. Major players such as BP, Shell, and Centrica were already integrating power investments into their portfolios. This transition, however, presented both challenges and opportunities as oil and gas companies adapted to the power sector’s lower returns and distinct business dynamics, ultimately shaping the future of utilities, the energy transition, and broader market integration.
