ADI Chemical Market Resources has completed a strategic study of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) technologies, examining evolving production methods beyond the traditional ACH route and analyzing global market dynamics. MMA is widely used in coatings, adhesives, and copolymers, while PMMA is valued for its clarity, strength, and weatherability in automotive, electronics, construction, and solar energy. The report explores raw material synergies, manufacturing processes, and global demand outlooks to support producers, converters, and end users in capitalizing on future growth.
MMA and PMMA technologies
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a liquid monomer that is polymerized to produce acrylic polymers, primarily the homopolymer polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as well as copolymers. MMA has historically been manufactured using an acetone cyanohydrin (ACH) route that requires hazardous chemicals and produces undesirable byproducts; the traditional process has been improved, however, and non-ACH alternative manufacturing processes have been developed. MMA is a comonomer in paint, coatings, and adhesives resin formulations. In free radical initiated copolymers, MMA elevates the glass transition temperature and contributes durability, strength, transparency, and UV and abrasion resistance. Copolymers based on MMA are used as impact modifiers for other polymers. PMMA polymers are typically cast or extruded into sheets that have excellent strength, transparency, and weatherability. PMMA is also sold as pelletized compounds that are molded into shapes, such as for automotive applications. Applications of PMMA include glass replacement in shatterproof glass, safety glazing, panels and lighting displays, outdoor lighting fixtures, and in flat screen TV and monitors.
Market drivers in the MMA and PMMA markets
PMMA’s properties, particularly optical clarity and scratch resistance, drive its use in a range of markets, including electronic equipment displays, LCD screens, mobile phone screens, lighting, windows, panels for construction, automotive, and other transportation. In automotive and transportation, the move to lightweighting is a driver for the use of polymers in general, including PMMA. PMMA’s durability makes it useful in photovoltaic panels for solar energy production. PMMA sheets are also used in clear barriers in medical and healthcare. Polycarbonate (PC), which is also a clear glass alternative, is a competitive plastic in some of these applications. Exhibit below shows global PMMA demand by application.
