At the 2020 ADI Forum, Horace Hobbs, Chief Economist, Phillips 66, discussed the oil industry’s strategic shift toward chemicals as fuel demand decreases, leading to the transformation of refineries into petrochemical hubs. Companies like Reliance are planning to convert refineries to produce olefins and aromatics instead of conventional fuels, a trend particularly relevant in resource-rich regions like the Gulf where crude oil sales are challenging. The focus is shifting towards plastics and chemicals, which offer more consistent demand. While natural gas liquids are the most economical feedstock for plastics, supply constraints are prompting some regions to explore alternatives like naphtha. With significant investments from major players such as ExxonMobil and Saudi Aramco, the crude-to-chemicals approach is set to redefine the refining industry, positioning chemicals as the primary future of oil.
