April 2015- The DUG Bakken and Niobrara conference was held on April 1-2, 2015, in Denver, Colorado at the Colorado Convention Center. ADI Analytics’ CEO Uday Turaga took part in the panel: What is the next direction for Bakken? Uday Turaga also presented on, “Can Innovation Help Reduce Flaring?”
Key messages discussed included, one, gas flaring in the oilfield has gone from a problem discussed by the media to one that is attracting increasing regulatory attention. This was caused by Bakken driving the bulk of drawing growth. One way the states have been trying to control this is by setting regulations that focus on limiting periods of flaring. Two, natural gas flaring is a complex problem with several conceptual solutions that struggle commercially. Some problems include pricing differentials, infrastructure, regulatory drivers, feedstock complexity, technology, and scale limitations. Three, gas to produce power is an attractive solution with currently available technologies. Fourth, virtual pipelines are being proposed but are limited by distance and costs. Although this method is useful, it can be expensive for some regions.
