June 10, 2015- ADI Analytics attended the 2015 Air Liquide Methanol Conference and presented on, “Natural Gas Utilization via Small-Scale Methanol Technologies.” The presentation included methanol supply and demand analysis, demand drivers, and cost and economics of methanol plants.
The report demonstrated four key takeaways as well. First, growing supply of cheap natural gas has been driving interest in gas monetization options in North America with LNG exports enjoying most investor interest. Second, natural gas flaring coupled with promising pricing, mature markets, and various end-uses are driving interest in small-scale methanol. Third, small-scale methanol plants have higher capital costs but can be economically viable if natural gas can be sourced cost effectively. Lastly, investors will have to address several risks associated with small-scale methanol technology, competition from large plants, and regional product demand. There have been various companies who are developing small-scale methanol technology along with Air Liquide, such as Maverick Synfuels, Sciences, Oberon Fuels, GasTehno, and Primus.
