February 23-24, 2021- At the 2021 SPE International Polyolefine Conference, ADI Analytics' CEO, Uday Turaga delivered a presentation titled, “How Plastic Recycling has changed after COVID-19.' The presentation focused on explaining four key ways the COVID-19 pandemic has affected plastic recycling and the value proposition of plastics.
Using substantial research and consulting work, ADI demonstrated how the use of masks and other COVID-19 related protective equipment led to more uses of plastics and petrochemicals. Second, specific bans placed by countries along with a great deal of fear around virus transmission impacted how people recycled, which reduced significantly. This also had an impact on sale volumes due to lower demand. Third, the report included the setbacks to plastics through policy and regulatory delays. Lastly, research shows a slowdown within innovation during the pandemic and that could directly affect plastic recycling.
Despite various setbacks that occurred during COVID-19, ADI anticipates plastic recycling will eventually continue to grow especially with many regulations set to be implemented in 2021 through 2022. Continuously following global trends in the plastic recycling industry, ADI believes consumer pressures on companies that we saw prior to COVID-19 will in time return causing recycling to be back on track.
