At the 2024 ADI Forum, David LaMont, SVP, Corporate Development, SunGas Renewables; Hahn Nguyen, VP, Sustainability, OCI Global; and Esben Sorensen, Sr. Director, Global Market Development, Plug Power, joined Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics for the methanol and ammonia panel. Turaga began the session by providing a comprehensive market overview. This set the stage for an engaging conversation on the role of these fuels in the energy transition. The methanol and ammonia markets were increasingly focused on sustainability. Green methanol was projected for growth as a marine fuel despite cost hurdles. Meanwhile, low-carbon ammonia, particularly blue, was gaining traction as a hydrogen carrier. It was also used for power generation in Asia, propelled by regulatory incentives.
The viability of these green fuels hinged on “green premiums” and supportive regulations. While green methanol found consistent demand in European road transport, its marine application was still emerging. Scaling up green hydrogen production via electrolyzers remained a challenge. This process required further cost reductions through technological advancements and flexible operations with variable renewable energy.
