At the 2024 ADI Forum, Tim Adams, VP, Corporate Strategy, Hunt Refining, presented a keynote address. He detailed the company’s unique position and how it specialized in processing discounted heavy crude, producing significant asphalt. This was followed by a moderated session with Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics. During this session, they discussed the struggles of small U.S. refiners with the Renewable Fuel Standard. They also explored their market vulnerabilities, and the importance of niche markets like asphalt.
He explained how Hunt Refining differentiated itself by processing distressed, heavy sour crude oils. This enabled it to produce significant volumes of asphalt and diesel, unlike many Gulf Coast refiners. Adams elaborated on Hunt Refining’s proactive approach to energy transition, viewing it as an “energy addition” rather than a complete transition. He discussed their strategy to get ahead of environmental regulations by focusing on carbon capture projects. This includes the one under development to sequester their own emissions, leveraging tax credits from the IRA Bill.
