At the 2024 ADI Forum, Blake Simmons, Chief Science & Technology Officer, Joint BioEnergy Institute; Tamara Siskind, Director, BD, Viridi RNG; and Jesse Blair, Director, RNG Synthica Energy, joined Panuswee Dwivedi, Project Manager, ADI Analytics. The group had an insightful discussion on market trends, emerging technologies, including biofuels like SAF and RNG, and the role of these sustainable energy solutions in the global transition to cleaner fuels.
The discussion included the growing adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). Global regulations, particularly in the US and Europe, were driving SAF mandates. Projections showed SAF could constitute 45-63% of jet fuel by 2050. While HEFA and Alcohol-to-Jet were currently the most mature SAF pathways, advancements were being made in others. For RNG, North America was cost-competitive, though high price differentials between natural gas and RNG, along with pipeline interconnection costs, pose barriers. Despite this, demand for RNG was expected to triple by 2040, driven by utility gas distribution and voluntary markets.
