At FlexPO+ 2023 (now part of the ADI Forum), Richard Shaw, Director of Circular Economy & Sustainability at Americas Styrenics, discussed the company’s commitment to recycling and sustainability, as well as its perspective on the future of sustainable plastics.

The discussion highlighted AmSty’s investment in polystyrene recycling, including the use of both dissolution and pyrolysis technologies to convert waste into virgin-quality material. Shaw also referenced a new off-take agreement for recycled benzene and noted the role of public pressure related to plastic waste in shaping these efforts. He emphasized the need to scale a range of recycling technologies—both mechanical and advanced—and stated that accelerating progress beyond organic development, along with localized feedstock acquisition strategies, would be necessary to meet societal and regulatory expectations for plastic repurposing.
