At the 2023 ADI Forum (formerly FlexPO+), Victor Toffoli, Senior Analyst, ADI Analytics, discussed the steady growth of the polyethylene and polypropylene markets in 2023, driven by demand from packaging, automotive, infrastructure, and renewable energy. He highlighted key trends such as China’s capacity expansion and the increasing use of recycled materials. Additionally, he said that polyolefin demand showed positive growth through 2025, with polypropylene (PP) leading due to automotive applications and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) driven by infrastructure projects in China and India, as well as polyethylene octene (POE/POP) for solar encapsulants.
Conversely, single-use plastic bans were causing lower growth for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and recycled HDPE was experiencing rapid growth, forecast to reach 10% of total HDPE share by 2030, which will notably impact new HDPE demand. This is largely because recycled HDPE maintains high property values, with the surge in Electric Vehicles (EVs) being a major factor.
