Navigating the future: LNG bunkering demand in 2023

At the 2023 ADI Forum, Blake Littauer, President of Puget LNG, shared insights on the future of LNG bunkering. As the shipping industry pushed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, LNG had become the leading solution. It offered an established infrastructure, a strong safety record, and immediate scalability. Littauer discussed LNG’s competitive edge over alternative fuels like methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen. These alternatives remained in the early development stages.

With renewable natural gas (RNG) emerging as a key piece of the net-zero puzzle, LNG was set to play a dominant role in maritime fuel well into 2040. This trend was expected to continue beyond 2040. While alternative fuels would contribute to the energy transition, LNG’s proven reliability and availability made it a cornerstone of sustainable shipping.
