At the FlexPO+ 2023 (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Richard Shaw, Director, Circular Economy & Sust., Americas Styrenics shared the company’s commitment to recycling and sustainability, speaking about the future of sustainable plastics. AmSty was heavily invested in polystyrene recycling, utilizing both dissolution and pyrolysis technologies to convert waste into virgin-quality material. These efforts, including a new off-take agreement for recycled benzene, were crucial as the company faced public pressure regarding plastic waste.

AmSty believed in scaling diverse recycling technologies, both mechanical and advanced, emphasizing that competition drives innovation. Shaw said the industry must rapidly accelerate progress beyond organic development, akin to a “moonshot.” He also said they should develop localized feedstock acquisition strategies to meet societal and regulatory demands for plastic repurposing.
