At the 2022 ADI Forum (formerly FlexPo+), Raj Krishnaswamy, VP, Polymers R&D, CJ Bio joined the bio-based polymers and sustainable materials panel, moderated by Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics. He explained how microorganisms create this biodegradable polymer, derived from biomass, with various applications.
Krishnaswamy said that this inherent biological function means these polymers are naturally biodegradable wherever microbial activity exists. They are 100% bio-based, derived from the fermentation of sugar sourced from first or second-generation cellulosic biomass. Once produced and recovered, the polymer can be processed using any traditional method to create various products. At the end of their life, if disposed of properly, these materials will completely biodegrade.
