At the 2022 FlexPO+ (now incorporated into the ADI Forum), Richard Thomas, Sr. Manager, Strategy & Bus. Dev, TotalEnergies US discussed sustainability in the polyethylene and polypropylene industry during PE and PP markets panel moderated by Uday Turaga, CEO, ADI Analytics. Thomas said that TotalEnergies was actively pursuing decarbonization and sustainability goals, with a primary focus on two broad strategies, one involving carbon capture and storage (CCUS). The other strategy, termed “go green,” leverages their solar power assets to offset electricity consumption across all U.S. sites, thereby reducing Scope 1 emissions.

Beyond these core strategies, TotalEnergies was exploring other initiatives such as hydrogen utilization, though was not cost-effective for direct use in refinery furnaces. A key area of focus is renewable fuels production at the refinery. This involved converting existing distillate hydrotreaters to process waste oils (like used cooking oil) and crop-based oils. The aim here was to lower the overall carbon intensity of their refined products, contributing significantly to their decarbonization efforts.
